Irene Karanja had given up hope in life after the passing away of her husband who had battled illness for 10 years. Along the way, she accumulated bad debts that led to the auctioning of her tailoring business.

She was left hopeless. Her only source of livelihood had be taken away. Her revenue stream cut off. Getting basic needs such as food became an extreme struggle. School fees was a task she could no longer manage.

Today, Irene can manage to smile, thanks to a group of well wishers who have come to her aid. One of these is Peter Nyaga, a philanthropist and the managing director of Certified Homes Ltd.

“I was moved by Irene’s story. I felt compelled to lend a hand to someone whose future and children’s future looked gloomy,” he says. After contemplating on how well Irene could be supported to get back on her feet again, Mr. Nyaga decided to help her restart her business.

“We decided to teach this widow how to fish instead of just giving her fish. This is because we believe that it is important to show people where to go and earn a living, instead of making them slaves of handouts,” said Nyaga.

Irene now has a full assortment tools to start doing business again. She has a brand new sewing machine, curtains and tailoring materials, mosquito nets and loose covers. Her sons’ school fees has also been paid courtesy of DJ Jeff Kush.
