23-year-old Martin Mwangi: Growing richer than my peers through business

At only 23 years of age, Martin Mwangi has managed to create a sizable wealth for himself. He has achieve more than many of his age-mates. The young entrepreneur – who is a third year student pursuing a Bachelor of Commerce degree – is the founder and CEO of Elegante Gents, based in Nairobi.

Below, he shares his entrepreneurship story:

I have been in fashion business since 2012. At the time, I was a first year student at the university. In the first two years of the business, I dealt with custom made shoes only. Then during my second year, I started selling official ties and bow-ties. Last year in October 2016, I re-branded and expanded the business. I started making official suits and general male clothing.

My pursuits were not so far fetched. I have always dreamed of being an internationally recognized fashion icon and designer. Subsequently, I have set up my bar as high as Davidson Frere’, an American designer.

Being young in the business has not been without challenges. I have dealt with numerous challenges from time to time.

One of these has been failure by my tailors to complete assignments in good time. This is greatly damaging to my brand. In this business, you must be reliable and always able to provide quality within the stipulated period. You cannot afford to have a reputation of disappointing clients.

From the journey I have taken in business, I have come to learn that as youth, we should realize that we are living with an abundance of opportunities around us. We must be ready to take up the risk and venture out of the nest. At the end of the day, how we maximize opportunities is what  will set a budding entrepreneur from a failure.
