3 arrested for stripping and sexually abusing woman in a Githurai bus

Three people including the crew of a bus where a woman was stripped and sexually abused in Nairobi have been arrested. The three were arrested Thursday after the woman came out and helped police in identifying the Githurai 45 bound bus along Thika Road.

The bus was also detained at the Kasarani Police Station after the Anti-Stripping Police Squad dramatically stopped it on the busy highway. The squad with their colleagues from Kasarani Police Station are looking for more suspects who were involved in the incident. Police in the city had appealed to the woman who was captured in a video clip while pleading with the men not to assault her to come forward and help them in solving the case.

The video was captured in the bus and shows the woman pleading with her attackers not to rape her and insert a bottle into her private parts as they had threatened while touching her. She recorded her statement at the station. Nairobi Area head of CID Nicholas Kamwende said the arrest of the suspects was a step forward in the war on the crime that is on the rise.

We still have threats to our women and urge the lady who was assaulted and stripped at the Embasava bus stop to also come out. We must stop these criminals,” said Kamwende.

The Anti-Stripping Squad that is based in Nairobi Area has more than a dozen officers and is specifically focusing on increasing cases of attacks on women. At least five women have been stripped in the last three weeks in a worrying trend.

Five suspects arrested for allegedly undressing and sexually assaulting a woman in Nairobi’s Kayole estate appeared in court Thursday.

They did not plead to charges as one of them is deaf and mute and requires an interpreter. The accused are Mr Samuel Karanja, Mr Zachary Gitonga Nderitu, Mr Kelvin Njuguna Wainaina , Mr David Kinuthia Mbathi and Mr Hosea Kasim, who is deaf.

They appeared before a Makadara court and will be charged Friday with indecently assaulting the woman (name withheld). The 23-year-old is still recovering in a city hospital, according to court documents filed in the case. The prosecution says the suspects intentionally touched the woman’s private parts against her will. The incident occurred along Mihango Stage in Kayole on November 17.
