Are CVs becoming obsolete with the rise of video interviews?
With many employers incorporating video screening as part of the hiring process, concerns have emerged that traditional CVs may be losing relevance.

Some industry experts argue that since candidates can now create highly polished CVs with the help of professional writers and AI tools, video interviews offer a way for employers to better assess applicants.
Career coach Kelvin Waga told Bizna Kenya that more employers are now requiring candidates to record video introductions before an actual interview. However, he emphasized that traditional CVs are not going away but will evolve alongside new formats.
“Traditional CVs will remain a core part of hiring but will likely integrate with video and AI-driven tools. AI will refine CV screening, making optimized, keyword-rich CVs even more critical. Cover letters may shift towards dynamic formats, such as short video messages. To remain competitive, candidates must master both written and video presentation skills.”
According to Waga, employers use video interviews to assess a candidate’s communication skills, confidence, and personality. However, he cautioned that video interviews could introduce bias, as factors like accents might unfairly disadvantage some candidates.
“Not all candidates have access to high-quality recording equipment or stable internet connections. Others may be excellent at their jobs but struggle with on-camera confidence,” he noted.
