Apple is rebuilding its Maps app – Apple Maps

Apple is rebuilding its Maps app - Apple Maps

There’s a very big difference between Google Maps and Apple Maps. And nowadays there’s Google Earth which gives you a 3D dimension of whatever you are searching for hence you can view real time pictures at the comfort of your home. However, Apple is planning to change this narrative by revamping the Apple Maps.

The app was launched in 2012 and it has never picked up. Apple has been collecting its own mapping data direct from the street since 2015, but in October 2018 Apple employees were seen collecting data.

“Apple is driving vehicles around the world to collect data which will be used to improve Apple Maps. Some of this data will be published in future Apple Maps updates. We are committed to protecting your privacy while collecting this data. For example, we will blur faces and license plates on collected images prior to publication. If you have comments or questions about this process.” Apple wrote on its website.

The company is planning to send its team to various locations throughout California, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Santa Clara Country, home to Apple’s head office in the city of Cupertino. This activity will wrap up on December 23, the company wrote.

The tech giant has also listed a number of places it’s planning to deploy mapping cars over the next couple of months as it continues efforts to gather its own data to add more detail to its maps. This essentially means that company will no longer depend on third party information.

Apple wants to improve the map’s accuracy, ensuring that the app doesn’t only stay up to date, but that it also receives 24/7 updates. The company also provides that in its current iteration of Maps, updated road infrastructure takes some time. But in the new version, it will be very quick and easy, which should help ensure that the app remains up to date.

“Since we introduced this six years ago — we won’t rehash all the issues we’ve had when we introduced it — we’ve done a huge investment in getting the map up to par,” Apple Senior Vice President Eddy Cue told TechCrunch. “We’ve done a huge investment of making millions of changes, adding millions of locations, updating the map and changing the map more frequently.”
