Patricia Too: I rejected Italian dream to become county commissioner at 25

Patricia Too

Not too many people would turn down a fully paid scholarship with the opportunity of migration to Europe. But this is exactly what 25-year-old Patricia Too did.

Her gamble, though, has paid off as today, Patricia is an Assistant County Commissioner at Kakamega County.

Patricia had gotten a fully funded scholarship to pursue her Master’s degree. This came just as she had taken part in the October 2021 government recruitment, in which she was one of the youngest assistant commissioners to be selected.

Before the joy of getting selected could settle down in her, Patricia received news that she had bagged a scholarship to pursue her Masters in ICT for Internet and Multimedia at the University of Padua in Italy.

“If someone had told me early this year that I will willingly turn down a fully funded international scholarship to study for my Masters in Italy I would have told them to stop joking because it would have been a dream come true for me,” she said.

Faced with a dilemma, she chose to work for Kenya.

“If someone had told me earlier this year that I will be an Assistant County Commissioner, I would have just laughed and brushed it off. Today, I tell you all the above happened, I was in a dilemma, scholarship or job,(but here I am) your village girl is now an Assistant County Commissioner.” she said.

According to Patricia, her decision was based on proving that young leaders can propel the country forward.

According to her LinkedIn page, her background involves interest on Information and Communication Technology (ICT)- a course that she let go for the sake of her dreams.

Patricia went to the Kenya High School from 2011 to 2014 and attained a B+ in her KCSE. In 2015 she enrolled at Rongo University to study a course in ICT.

After graduating in 2019, she began her career at the Ministry of Interior Immigration Department as an Intern. She ended up working as an ICT Intern at the Office of the President for three months.

She then worked in the ICT department at the Public Service Commission before receiving an opportunity to work at the Ministry of Interior, where she was deployed to Kakamega.
