Ex-presidential candidate Mohamed Abduba Dida serving jail term in US

Former presidential candidate in Kenya Mohamed Abduba Dida is currently serving a seven-year jail sentence in a US prison.

Dida is serving the jail sentence at the Big Muddy Correctional Centre in Illinois. He has been incarcerated at the facility since November 18, 2022. Reports say that he was jailed after being found guilty on two separate charges that he was accused of committing in McLean County in Illinois.

In the first charge, Mohamed Abduba Dida was found guilty of one count of stalking and transmitting threats to his victim. This charge brought him a sentence of two years in prison.

In the second charge, he was found guilty of one count of aggravated stalking and violation of a restraining order. The order had barred him from approaching or talking to his victim. This charge came with a seven year sentence.

Mohamed Abduba Dida had vied for the presidency during the 2013 General Elections. He was the presidential candidate for the Alliance of Real Change party. Dida managed to garner 52,848 votes which was 0.43 per cent of the total votes.

The Big Muddy Correctional Centre where Dida is locked up was opened in March 1993. It is considered to be a medium security male prison with an operational capacity of 1,961. The prison had a population of 1,495 as at June 30, 2024.

Dida, who is described as being 5ft. 06 inches was admitted at the prison on November 18, 2022. He has a projected parole date of April 3, 2025, and a projected discharge date of April 3, 2029.
