TikTok maintained its spot as the world’s most downloaded app in the first half of 2022, with about 373.2 million downloads, according to a new study by Sensor Tower.
The video-sharing social media app, which has been downloaded 3.7 billion times, exceeded 3.5 billion all-time downloads in the first quarter of this year.
It became the fifth mobile app (and the first outside of Facebook parent company Meta’s portfolio) to reach this impressive milestone.
This is amazing considering that TikTok remains banned in India since June 2020 over national security concerns.
Prior to the ban, TikTok was so popular in India, with about 200 million monthly active users in the country.
Meta-owned Instagram was the second most downloaded app worldwide in the first half of the year, followed by Facebook and WhatsApp.
Snapchat was the fifth most popular app in the period.
Revenue
According to Sensor Tower, consumer spending on App Store and Google Play rose to $65 billion in the first half of 2022, from $64.4 billion in the same period last year.
App Store generated about $43.7 billion from app sales, subscriptions, and premium apps and games, up from $41.4 billion a year earlier.
On the other hand, Google Play generated about $21.3 billion in H1 2022, down from $23 billion last year.
