Uasin Gishu mother cries, begs court to increase son’s 8 year prison sentence

A Kenyan mother living in Kapseret, Uasin Gishu County has requested the court to extend her son’s sentence from 8 years. She was displeased with the final verdict issued.

Jimmy James Kipchumba was sentenced by Principal Magistrate Christine Menya on 3 counts of threatening to kill his mother, steal and damage property.

His 72-year-old mother, who had worked as a prison guard before, wept upon hearing her abusive son’s light prison sentence. She said that she was expecting her son to get at least 30 years in prison.

“Because of the pain he has caused us, I would like him to stay in jail for longer so that my family can have peace,” she said.

Jimmy Kipchumba was charged on October 6th after threatening to kill his mother and siblings after uttering the words ‘Hutafika January nitawamaliza’. Furthermore, he was charged with theft and property damage.

Despite denying all charges against him, he was not granted bail. After the court sentencing, his mother stormed out of the courtroom, claiming that her life as well as her other children’s lives were in imminent danger.

“As a former warder, the sentence handed down today will not reform this boy. He is likely to return home in less than four years,” the 72-year-old spoke fluently.

Jimmy Kipchumba told the court that the case was a misunderstanding following a fallout with his siblings. He added that they were framing him so that they could share their family wealth without him.

“I know that my brothers and sisters are happy because they expect me to die in prison so that they can inherit my father’s estate. Let us meet in heaven if you wish,” he told the court.
