Video: Death toll from Mwingi bus accident hits 33

Mwingi Accident: The death toll from the bus accident that occurred at River Enziu in mwingi, Kitui County has hit 33. This is after ten more bodies were recovered on Sunday.

The school bus which was ferrying the travelers to a wedding plunged into Mwingi’s Enziu River as the driver attempted to cross a flooded section of the road.

It was not immediately clear how many people were on board the bus with a projected sitting capacity of over fifty passengers.

The rushed people were rushed to Mwingi Level Four Hospital for emergency treatment. Mwingi East sub-county police commander Joseph Yakan said search and rescue efforts were underway even as agencies worked to established the number of people booked on the bus before it set out on the journey to Mwingi North.

The accident is reported to have occurred at around 11am at Ngune Village in Mwingi Central. The travelers were choir members of Mwingi Catholic Church, and were travelling to Nuu area from Mwingi Town. Police said the choir members were heading for their male colleague’s wedding, when the accident happened.

Passengers on board the bus could be seen screaming and raising their hands through the windows as the bus sank gradually. According to Kitui County Police Commander Leah Kithei, the 51-seater bus belongs to Mwingi Junior Seminary, a Catholic Church- run private school.
