The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued a nationwide crackdown on motor vehicle owners who are ‘misusing’ the Kenya Dealer (KD) license plates. The notice issued targets the use of unregistered vehicles on Kenyan roads.
This is part of a multitask force agency approach, among them KRA, Directorate of Immigration Services (DIS), Financial Reporting Centre (FRC), to ensure compliance with provisions of the Traffic Act, Cap 403. NTSA urged these agencies to impound all vehicle operating illegally with the KD license plates.
“Law enforcement agencies are advised to impound vehicles operating without registration plates, those unlawfully using Kenya Dealer (KD) plates and charge the respective dealers and owners,” NTSA directed in their notice.
NTSA stated that KD plate owners will only be allowed to use the green plates when proceeding to or returning from an inspection, examination or test. Vehicle owners will be allowed to have the KD plate when coming from the car dealer’s premises to a railway station or wharf for entraining or shipment.
The transport sector regulator further noted that police have been authorized to impound all vehicles found on the road with this license plate, should they be operating without purposes of road tests after purchase or on completion of assembly.
Several scenarios other than the aforementioned where KD plates can be used include when proceeding to vehicle tests when the owner is from the purchase at the dealers, when proceeding from a public weighbridge or NTSA registration offices.
Precautions to take before driving a KD plate registered vehicle
Drivers will be allowed on Kenyan roads with the license pates if they are moving from the dealer’s premises to those of the purchaser or another dealer. New vehicles that will experience a breakdown on the road are allowed towing using the plates.
Vehicle dealers and garage owners have further been directed to update their KD plate details as per the Movement Register on their website before the December 16th deadline.
“Update KD plate details as per the Movement Register, this may be checked for free through ntsa.go.ke – Dealers & Garages Licensing,” it added.
