Otieno Kajwang’ and Mutula Kilonzo: tale of friends dying in mysterious circumstances?

The sudden death of Otieno Kajwang’ on Tuesday night marked the second demise of a serving senator. Similarly, it was akin to the demise of his late colleague Mr. Mutula Kilonzo, who died under unclear circumstances in his home on April 27, 2013.

Strikingly, both Mutula Kilonzo and Otieno Kajwang were notable colleagues of the popular – now defunct – KISS 100 CrossFire show, during which the two were fiery debaters. The duo was highly regarded as the fulcrum that drove the show.

Mr. Kilonzo, a newly elected senator for Makueni County, was found dead at his Valhalla home, bordering Maanzoni lodge along Mombasa Road on the morning of April 27 in 2013. He was reported to have slept and failed to wake up.

Nonetheless, investigations revealed that the Makueni senator had vomited food and blood. Later it was alleged that traces of sildenafil citrate and ephedrine hydrochloride were discovered in the Senator’s blood. The former is normally used to treat high blood pressure or prescribed as a Viagra The latter is a stimulant used to treat patients with asthma or a blocked nose.

On the other hand, Otieno Kajwang’ died suddenly at around 11.30pm at Mater Hospital in the South B area, with cardiac arrest highly suspected. He had been rushed to the hospital at around 9pm after complaining of chest pain.

Mutula and Kajwang’ are two of the three members of the initial cabinet sub-committee on ICC who have since died. The other is the late Professor George Saitoti who perished in a plane accident.

Kajwang’s post mortem is currently going on at the Lee Funeral Home to establish the exact cause of his sudden death. His father, David Ajwang’ who collapsed on hearing the death of his son is still undergoing treatment at the Agha Khan Hospital in Kisumu.
