Two time Hong Kong Marathon Champion Cyprian Kiogora and 2011 Rotterdam Marathon winner Philes Ongori will headline this year’s Safaricom Imenti South Road Race.
The 12th Edition of the event themed,Running for healthy and wealthy living will be held on Sunday 9th December at Nkubu Stadium in Meru County and is set to attract over 500 local and International athletes and over 2,000 spectators.
Other notable athletes that are set to take part include; Embu’s Pauline Njeru, Nancy Nzisa from Machakos County and Isaac Kipkoech from Kericho County.
“For the past ten years we have supported this event as part of our broader strategy to impact the lives of our Kenyan athletes. We believe in the power of sports to change lives hence our commitment to continue supporting this road race,” said Sylvia Mulinge – Chief Customer Officer, Safaricom.
Winners of the 15km road race will walk away with KES 100,000, while 2nd and 3rdplace finishers will get cash rewards of KES 50,000 and KES 25,000 respectively. Safaricom has sponsored the Marathon to a tune of KES 1Million.
“It is through such events that talented youth are exposed and nurtured and I believe this is one of the reasons our country continues to produce spectacular athletes,” said Isaiah Muthomi, Secretary General Athletics Kenya – Imenti South.
Other than the 15 km race, there will be 6km and 8km cross-country races for boys and girls, and a 4km event for veterans. There will also be 800m races for boys and girls and a 2km VIP race.
