Raila: Convicted MP Waluke should not serve jail sentence over corruption

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has come out to defend convicted member of parliament John Waluke. Waluke is currently serving jail term over corruption.

According to Raila, the court made a mistake by convicting the Sirisia MP over funds involving the National Cereals and Produce Board.

“The fact that Waluke demanded and received payment for their dues makes their case more of a civil one. He is now being sentenced to 67 years in prison rather than arguing that they should return the money because it was paid inadvertently,” Raila said.

Waluke presented himself to Milimani Law Courts on October 7, after the High Court dismissed his appeal against his conviction.

He will serve 67 years behind bars or pay Sh. 1 billion fine for his involvement in a fraudulent case where more than Sh. 300 million was irregularly spent from NCPB.

Raila compared Waluke’s case to that of President Ruto’s cabinet secretaries, who have been approved by the National Assembly despite having active cases in court.

The former Prime Minister said the CSs had unresolved cases of murder and corruption and yet were allowed to work in public offices.

“The individuals who were accused of murder have since been pardoned and approved to serve as cabinet secretaries. Others have reported instances of corruption, but they now claim that these were only grumblings. However, they are harassing us,” Raila said.
