Why young entrepreneurs should stay single

Relationships are important for all human beings. It means a great deal to connect with someone at a personal level and share your life with them. When you’re in a relationship, there are no secrets.

Your partner expects that you lay yourself bare; vulnerability is inevitable. As a young entrepreneur, however, relationships may have a negative impact on your business considering all the strings attached. Young entrepreneurs should stay single and here’s why:

Overspending

Valentine’s Day was with us just a few days ago, and young men and women spent their money to impress their significant others. Being a young entrepreneur, every penny counts towards the growth of your business. Money made should be invested back into the business for it to grow.

Spending money on a significant other is not a bad thing, but it is not advisable for a young entrepreneur looking to expand. Some relationships can be strenuous and demanding; one may find themselves constantly spending to spoil and impress a significant other with material things which will slow down the growth of the business.

Lavish dinners, expensive shopping trips, impromptu road trips and the like are some of the things that cause the young to overspend.

Wastage of time

Couples love spending all their free time together. They dedicate whatever extra time they can get out of their busy schedules to make their relationships meaningful and stronger.

Why young entrepreneurs should stay single

Having a partner means that you are almost always available when they need you, and this can be all the time! Young entrepreneurs should stay single for this reason. Their time should be invested in building their business.

Distractions

There are a lot of emotions involved when one is in a relationship. These may be positive or negative. Negative emotions brought about by anger or disappointment can be very distracting for a young entrepreneur who is meant to be focusing on his business.

Here’s an illustration:

Henry had had a good day at work. He hurried home to change, as he had a meeting with some potential investors for his business. When he got home, his girlfriend was in the shower. Her phone suddenly started ringing. It was Josh. Who was Josh? He decided to pick up and the first thing Josh said was, “I miss you already.”

Henry quickly hung up. He was surprised, angry, disappointed, hurt and felt very betrayed. He called off his meeting. There was no way he was leaving that house without a proper explanation of what was going on.

See, Henry is distracted from what’s important. Instead of putting his business first, he decided to stay home and solve a matter that had arisen, threatening his relationship, which probably ended up costing him an opportunity to work with the investors.

Negative Influence

You may have a partner who does not believe in you. This can affect young entrepreneurs’ growth because they are influenced to believe they are not good enough.

If you start a business that fails, your partner may discourage you from trying again; they may think it’s a “waste of money” or give other reasons why you shouldn’t give it another try.

Staying single as a young entrepreneur helps you to stay focused and no one can let you down apart from you. You’re less critical of yourself when you’re single because everything you do is for you.

As a young man/woman, you’re at the peak of your creativity, and you could end up wasting it by giving all your energy to someone else. You have lots of energy and are able to think clearly and make sound decisions without the influence of someone else.
