21,588 students shun universities; Over 500,000 refuse to apply to join colleges

Over half a million students who qualified to join Technical and Vocational Colleges (Tvets) did not bother to apply for their positions.

At the same time, some 21,588 students who qualified to join universities have turned down the offer. Out of these, 16,310 who qualified for university did not bother to apply, while 5,278 who qualified for degree programs will now join colleges.

This is according to data from the Ministry of Education. This data is derived from the results of the 2022 university and college placements by the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement (Kuccps).

The data shows that the number of those placed in universities is 4,110 lower than those placed last year, when 128,073 students were placed to pursue degree courses.

826,807 candidates sat the 2021 KCSE exam. Among them, 145,145 scored a mean Grade of C+ (plus) and above, according to data from the Education ministry.

Those who scored a mean grade of C plain and below were 681,662, meaning they qualified to apply for placement in the Tvets and the teacher training colleges (TTC).

“KUCCPS placed 293 (129 male, 164 female) to three colleges offering Diploma in Secondary Teacher Education, namely: Kagumo, Kibabii and Lugari TTCs. These students will be trained to deliver the CBC curriculum,” Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha said.

However, only 124,258 have been placed in Tvets, while 1,538 have been placed in primary education TTCs and another 293 in secondary education TTCs.

Students who score C- (minus) and C (plain) are eligible to apply for diploma courses. Those with Grade D- and D+ (plus) apply for certificate courses, while those with Grade D- (minus) are eligible for craft courses. Those with Grade E apply for artisan courses.

To confirm their placements, students have been advised to check their accounts on the KUCCPS portal. Effective July 1, 2022 KUCCPS will open its system for 2022 KCSE candidates to make their desired placement applications.
