Canada and Australia are two of the most highly desired countries by immigrants looking for a better life. The two are seen as viable alternatives to the United States.
Often, though, not too many people are able to tell which of the two has better prospects, and especially if one is relocating from Kenya where he or she has been holding a good job and salary.
This is the dilemma that one Kenya who together with her spouse earns half a million shillings monthly found herself in. She talked about her dilemma on a traveling group and explained as follows:
“I have been keenly following the discussions and posts on life abroad, but would want comments from wanderlusters who have small kids, living and working abroad.
I am currently living and working in Kenya, I am a banker in mid management. Family income is roughly Kes.500k monthly. In our mid 30s.
We have 3 babies (1, 3 and 6 years). I have had interests of living abroad but among other things, childcare expenses seem high to manage. Countries of interest are Canada and Australia.
Those living there, how is it? Careers in my line of work) I have a pretty decent life here but am open to moving. I have been invited so far by the Australian friend.
To relocate to Canada or Australia or not to? Please give me ideas so help me firm up on this decision once and for all. Thanks.”
Her predicament attracted huge reactions with some people wondering why she would want to relocate when she has such a good job.

Others urged her on, arguing that it was in the best interest of her kids. Here’s what Kenyans said about her dilemma:
CJ: “If I were you, but I am not you. I would start packing and relocate.
Before you do that, make sure you know where you are going, and have a safety net (socially & financially).
Do not be afraid, Diaspora is kind if you are open minded. Remember your academic papers might need boosting to match the country you will go. Ask yourself, what would be the worst case scenario.
Again, since you are financially comfortable, why cant you all travel as a family for a holiday in your country of interest, spend a whole month exploring, zero down to the city/town of your interest, meet people, interact and I am sure this will answer to all of your fears and concerns.”
Agnes: “If it was about you and the income you earn I’ll stay in Kenya! But I’ll relocate for the sake of the children, better education, and the future will be even brighter for those kids abroad than in Kenya.
If I were you I’ll relocate, as you will continue with your career, may be further studies, and also the kids future will be certain! A win for the all family long term.”
Shillar: “The biggest challenge abroad is child care… paying for daycare can drain you financially but again you can stay home take care if the kids as hubby goes to work…but honestly with that income enjoy the freedom in Kenya..
Live the best life at a cheaper price in kenya…getting a job abroad is also a challenge.. you should be ready to begin from low and raise up.”
What do you think she ought to do? Should she move or stay?
