Over 24 people are feared dead after a bus they were traveling in plunged into a river 40 metres below at the infamous Nithi Bridge black spot.
The bus belonging to Modern Coast was traveling from Meru to Mombasa. Multiple bodies were spotted lying on the wreckage and the river banks.
As rescue mission kicked off, those who were injured were rushed to Chogoria Mission Hospital while others were rushed to Chuka County Referral Hospital.
The people who witnessed the accident said that the bus appeared to have developed brake failure as it went down Nithi.
“The bus must have developed brake failure because it was at a very high speed when the accident happened,” said one of the eye witnesses, Nicholas Mutegi.
“It hit the guard rails and fell into the water. I heard a loud bang when it fell about 40 metres reducing the Bus into wreckage. I could count over 10 bodies put into the police vehicle and over 20 injured,” Mutegi added.

This is the latest in a series of ugly accidents involving public service vehicles. Less than two weeks ago, 18 people lost their lives when a matatu plying the Nairobi-Mombasa highway lost control and came to a head-on collision with a trailer.
