The government has suspended the Sh. 100 maize flour subsidy. According to cabinet secretary for Agriculture Peter Munya, the government has no funds in the National Treasury to fund the program any longer.
This suspension of the maize flour subsidy was announced by CS Munya.
“Due to inadequate exchequer releases from the National Treasury, it has been decided that, the Maize Flour Subsidy Program be suspended with immediate effect,” said Munya on the National Maize Flour Subsidy Program.
The Sh. 100 unga was a subsidy that was announced by president Uhuru Kenyatta three weeks ago.
It was meant to caution consumers from high prices, but was widely interpreted as a campaign gimmick.
Prior to the subsidy, Kenyans were buying maize flour at highs of Sh. 250 per 2kg packet.
