Raila speaks after Supreme Court upholds Ruto's win

Azimio la Umoja presidential candidate Raila Odinga has reacted to the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the election of William Ruto as the president of Kenya.

Shortly after the decision was rendered by Chief Justice Martha Koome, Raila said that he will respect the decision of the court. However, he stated that he vehemently disagrees with it.

“We respect the opinion of the court , although we vehemently disagree with their decision today,” he said. “We have always stood for the rule of law and the constitution.”

Raila had accused the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission chairman Wafula Chebukati of mismanaging the election.

Raila had also claimed that no presidential candidate had attained the 50 plus 1 vote required by the law.

He had alleged that the IEBC systems had been infiltrated by hackers who deducted his votes and added them unto Ruto. However, in all the petitions he tabled before court, none was found to contain any verifiable evidence. The petitions were rejected by all the seven judges.

In the ruling, the Supreme Court had found that Ruto had attained the mandatory constitutional requirements.

“It is our finding that the declared president-elect attained 50%+1 of all the votes cast in accordance with Article 138 of the constitution,” CJ Koome had ruled.

In his statement, Raila alleged that his lawyers proffered irrefutable evidence. “The facts were on our side, unfortunately the judges saw it otherwise. We find it incredible that the judges found against us on all nine (9) grounds and occasion resulted to unduly exaggerated language to refute our claims,” he said.

“This judgement is by no means the end of our movement, in fact it inspires us to redouble our efforts to transform this country into a prosperous democracy where each and every Kenyan can find their full belonging. We will be communicating in the near future on our plans to continue our struggle for transparency, accountability and democracy.”
