Ruto changes tune, blames cost of living on Russia-Ukraine war

President William Ruto has changed tune and blamed the rising cost of living on the Russia-Ukraine war.

This is in sharp contrast to commentaries Dr. Ruto made prior to the August 9 General Elections, in which he blamed the Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga faction for the poor state of the economy.

The challenge of the cost of living is increased agricultural productivity, blaming it on the war in Ukraine is a lost cause,” Ruto said during his Kenya Kwanza manifesto launch.

In his new position, Dr. Ruto is now calling for an end to the war in order to lower the rising cost of living.

“We must bring the conflict to an end. The position of Kenya is that we need a peaceful resolution, a mechanism that will bring the war to a stop because whatever it is, we are all bearing the effects of what that conflict potents for us. High food prices, we cannot pay for and access fertilizers…,” said Ruto.

This is the second time that Dr. Ruto is blaming the war in Ukraine for the rising costs of basic goods. He first made the blame on September 24 during an interview with Al Jazeera. On October 8, Dr. Ruto once again said that the war in Ukraine was causing inflation in Kenya and the East Africa region.

Since his inauguration on September 13, Dr. Ruto’s Kenya Kwanza side led by his deputy Rigathi Gachagua have been crying wolf that they found zero at the National Treasury.

The government side has been asking Kenyans to tighten their belts, with National Assembly deputy speaker Gladys Shollei saying it will take 3 to 12 months to lower the cost of living.

This is in contrast to the pledge Kenya Kwanza had made during the campaigns that it will take 100 days or less to bring the cost of living down.
