Woman who left Sh. 40,000 government job for politics, now earns Sh. 500 from mjengo

Agnes Nkanya

The past few months, after the elections, have been a nightmare for Agnes Nkanya Wanja who lost the 2022 elections.

She resigned from a relatively luxurious government job in the Ministry of Agriculture.

Barely a year ago, Ms. Nkanya was dining with some of the great names in Kenya, such as the President and Interior CS Kithure Kindiki.

She had worked for ten years at the government statute before she handed over her resignation to chase Magumoni ward MCA seat in Tharaka Nithi. Per reports, she earned Sh. 40,000 from her government job.

She vied through the Devolution Party of Kenya, chaired by Kithure Kindiki.

In an interview, Ms. Nkanya claims she was one of the youth front runners who cheered on and supported William Ruto and the Kenya Kwanza, leading them to a landslide victory from the area.

“I come from Tharaka Nithi County; I am a civil servant. I got into elective politics in the last election as MCA Magumoni ward. After the elections I did not have a place to fall back into, something to sustain myself,” she told Nation in the interview.

According to her, she used all her savings from the job she worked for over ten years, without laying a backup plan if she did not win the seat. This is how she ended up getting a job at a construction site and car wash, earning at least Sh. 500 a day.

Holding tears back here is what she had to say:

“I looked everywhere for a job and the only place I was able to get something to do, is at this construction site, and I decided to try. I have never done this before but I decided to put my heart into it to see what I can get from this place.”

The mother of one noted that she was not seeking for pity from anyone by sharing her story. She wants other youth to learn from her mistakes.

“Unfortunately, as young people, we did not have people to hold our hands and I am coming to say what I am going through for pity. I am coming out to share my pain, my struggles so that someone else should not go through the same.”

Furthermore, she’s requested an audience with President Ruto and Kithure Kindiki, so they can help her.

“I humbly request William Ruto, please, give an appointment to youth who campaigned for Kenya Kwanza to deliberate on the way forward.”
