Kayole Starlets’ midfielder Lucy Njeri is a perfect example of a footballer who has found success beyond the field.

With a football journey that dates back to her time with Kariobangi Sports, Old is Gold, Makolanders, Soccer Sisters, and currently being a valuable member of the Kayole Starlets team, Njeri has not only excelled on the pitch but also ventured into the baking industry with her entrepreneurial spirit.

Njeri’s drive to plan for life beyond football led her to apply for a scholarship with the help of the Kenya Footballers Welfare Association (KEFWA) to pursue a pastry coursework and start her own baking business.

Completing her coursework with the support of KEFWA, she was able to establish her own bakery and has found success in the industry.

“I ventured into the business with the help of KEFWA, and I was able to complete my coursework, starting my own shop. Work has been good since now I can pay for my bills,” Njeri notes.

An essential factor contributing to Njeri’s achievements is her skill in managing both her football career and her business simultaneously. Being strategic in her approach, she has found ways to manage her time effectively.

“Most of my customers are my fellow players, and I usually engage in business at the stadium and after matches, making it easier for me to balance football and business,” she added.

Her dedication to both her football career and her business showcases her astute business acumen and commitment to her passions.

Lucy Njeri’s journey serves as a compelling example of how diversifying income streams is crucial for professional athletes. Football careers can be short-lived, and having multiple sources of income can provide financial stability and security for the future.

In addition to her success in the baking industry, Njeri has also invested in her coaching career. She recently graduated with a FIFA/FKF CAF D coaching course license, which will enable her to coach both senior and junior teams.

Njeri also acknowledges the support of organizations like KEFWA in providing assistance to footballers and enabling them to thrive in their careers both on and off the pitch.

“I really appreciate organizations like KEFWA for consistently being at the forefront of providing support to players. Their commitment to members’ well-being has allowed many of us footballers to thrive in our careers both on and off the pitch,” she expresses her gratitude.

As a role model for other footballers, Njeri encourages her fellow players to consider avenues such as coaching, starting a business, investing in Saccos, or furthering their education to secure their financial future and achieve success beyond the field.
