Rowdy Protesters Vandalize Sections of Nairobi Expressway Leading to Closure

Moja Expressway has announced a temporary closure of a section of the Nairobi Expressway due to the ongoing nationwide protests.

In a statement on Wednesday, the operator said they have suspended toll services at the Mlolongo, Syokimau and SGR stations.

”For your safety, we urge all motorists plying the Westlands-Mlolongo route to exit from JKIA, and Mlolongo-Westlands bound motorists may safely join the road from JKIA Toll Station.,’’ reads the statement.

The operator further said that efforts to restore normalcy in the affected areas are underway.

In a viral video, the protesters were seen vandalizing a fence and road rails near Mlolongo Machakos County. Potted flowers on the road were also destroyed, and tyres were set ablaze on the multi-billion road.

According to Moja Express Public Relations Manager Jeanne May Ong’iyo, who spoke to Kenyans, the toll attendants were safely evacuated before the chaos ensued.

“The situation is under control, and the police officers are on the road and have restored normalcy. We cannot really say how long it will take for us to resume operations, but as soon as we have resumed, we will make a statement,” she stated.
