All teachers in Kenya will take home higher salaries starting this month after the Teachers Service Commission and the teachers’ unions agreed on a pay hike proposal.
The new salaries will be implemented immediately in the August payroll, and backdated to July 2023.
A breakdown of the higher salaries teachers will earn shows that the hikes will vary from job group to job group.
For instance, teachers in the job grade B5 will earn a minimum basic salary of Sh. 22,793 and a maximum basic salary of Sh. 28,491. In 2024, these salaries will increase to a minimum of Sh. 23,830 and a maximum of Sh. 29,787.
This category of teachers has been earning a minimum of Sh. 21,756 and a maximum of Sh. 27,195.
The highest paid teachers in the job grade D5 will now take home Sh. 159,534 in the year 2023. This amount will increase to a maximum of Sh. 162,539 in 2024.
Teachers in job grade C1 will now earn a minimum basic salary of Sh. 28,491 from a minimum basic salary of Sh. 27,195. Their maximum pay will be Sh. 35,614 from the current Sh. 33,994.
In 2024, their salaries will increase to a minimum of Sh. 29,787 and a maximum of Sh. 37,274.
Teachers in grade C2 who currently earn a minimum basic salary of Sh. 34,955 will now earn a minimum of Sh. 36,621 and a maximum of Sh. 45, 776. Their current maximum is Sh. 43,694. In 2024, their new minimum will be Sh. 38,286 with a maximum nof Sh. 47,858.
Grade C3 who earn a minimum of Sh. 43,154 and a maximum of Sh. 53,943 will now earn a minimum basic salary of Sh. 44,412 and a new maximum of Sh 56,514. In 2924, this will rise to a minimum of Sh. 45,671 and a maximum of Sh. 59,084.
Teachers in the job grade C4 who now earn a minimum basic salary of Sh. 52,308 will continue with this salary range but with an improvement on maximum basic salary from Shm 65,385 to Sh. 67,220 in 2023 and Sh. 68,857 in 2024.
