Kenya Airways increases flights to London to 14 times a week

National carrier Kenya Airways (KQ) has increased its weekly flights to London in the United Kingdom to 14 from the current 10 following a surge in demand for the route.

The new development, which is expected to take effect on October 29, 2023, will provide customers flying the route with the option of either traveling in the morning or evening.

“KQ will deploy the B787 Boeing Dreamliner on the route, bringing the total flights per week to 14, up from 10 flights. The additional weekly flights will cater to the increased market demand for this route and growing passenger demand.”

“The airline’s customers can now choose between a morning flight via KQ 100 and an evening flight via KQ 102, allowing more travel options, convenience, and flexibility,” KQ said in a statement on Thursday.

The move comes as a boost for the airline, which is fighting to fly out of the loss-making territory. In the six months to June 2023, KQ  reported a half-year loss of Sh21.7 billion attributed to heavy forex losses and multiple debts.

The loss, which was the airline’s biggest half-year loss, was realized despite a 56 percent growth in revenues to Sh75 billion and a 43 percent jump in passenger numbers to 2.3 million.

In 2021, the national carrier rolled out three flights to London after Kenya was removed from a red list by the UK.  In December 2022, KQ also resumed daily flights to New York over a high demand for the route.

Flights on the route were halted by restrictions that were put in place to curb the spread of coronavirus. The carrier increased the flight frequency to New York to five times per week from three in the previous year, citing high passenger bookings.
