I used to rank last in school- Gladys Shollei opens up on academic struggles

National Assembly Deputy Speaker Gladys Boss Shollei, on Monday, January 8, opened up about how she struggled academically during her primary school days.

Speaking during the release of the 2023 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results, the Uasin Gishu County Woman Representative revealed she used to rank bottom in her class.

The situation escalated to secondary school at Loreto Convention School, where she started as a C and a D student, but through determination, she completed her education with a strong finish as an A student in the KCSE exam.

“When I did my CPE, I was at the bottom of my class; I had the lowest marks at Hills School Eldoret, that year. Totally at the bottom. In fact, I couldn’t get a place at the secondary school.”

“But because my sister was already at Loreto Convention School, the nuns decided to allow me to go to school just to keep us together, and by the time I finished at Loreto, I was at the top of my class,” she revealed.

She encouraged students who performed poorly not to let the results define their future.

“Even those students at the bottom, remember you have the opportunity to go to TVETs and colleges, and eventually, you might make your way to be a professor,” she added.

Announcing the 2023 KCSE results, Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu said a total of 446,143 candidates scored between D Plus and D Minus.

The total number of students who scored grade D and below stood at 494,317. This meant that the number of Ds and Es in the 2023 KCSE exams increased from the 489,081 students who scored grade Ds and Es in the 2022 examinations.
