At least two people were killed and over 200 others injured in a massive fire caused by a gas explosion in the Mradi area in Embakasi, Nairobi.
According to government Spokesperson Isaac Mwaura who shared the news on Friday Morning, the fire broke out at a gas filling company near Kabansora along Airport North Road on Thursday night at around 11 pm.
“The company was refilling gas cylinders when the fire broke out and several people were injured and rushed to hospital,” Mwaura stated.
Two people an adult and a minor,who were critically injured passed away at around 4:30 am while undergoing treatment.
The 222 others who were injured were rushed to various hospitals including Kenyatta National Hospital (21), Mama Lucy General Hospital (160), Mbagathi Hospital (19), Modern Komarock Hospital (14), Nairobi West Hospital (8).

“One Lorry of an unknown registration number that was loaded with gas exploded, igniting a huge ball of fire that spread widely. A flying gas cylinder hit Oriental Godown, burning down the said godown which deals with garments and textiles,” he added.
“Sadly, residential houses in the neighborhood also caught fire, with a good number of residents still inside as it was late at night,” Mwaura said.
Photos of eyewitnesses who rushed to the scene to rescue the victims indicated burns on their bodies. Several vehicles and commercial properties were also damaged in the Thursday night fire accident.
“The government sends its most sincere condolences to the families of the departed souls. The Government is in the process of doing everything possible within its means, to assist the victims of the fire incident and also to help restore normalcy in the affected area.”
