US tells its citizens to hide their phones, watches, jewelry when in Nairobi

The US Embassy in Nairobi has issued a security alert for US citizens in Nairobi. In the alert released on March 15, 2024, the embassy cautioned that Nairobi is currently experiencing incidents of petty theft that involve phone snatching.

“There are reports of increased criminal activity in residential areas of Nairobi.  Incidents include crimes of opportunity such as purse and phone snatching.  The government of Kenya is taking measures to place more police in high crime areas,” the embassy stated.

It recommended that US citizens take  actions to protect themselves such as being aware of their surroundings, keep a low profile, and avoid displaying signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive jewelry or watches, or flashing large sums of money; keep valuables, such as phones, concealed.

“Do not physically resist any robbery attempt and remain calm. Confrontation with these individuals often leads to violence. In traffic, keep your doors locked and windows up,” the embassy stated.
