Following the heavy rains that have been witnessed in most parts of the country, the Cabinet Secretary for Education Ezekiel Machogu has announced that there are schools in several regions that will not reopen.
Learning institutions in these areas were heavily hit by the rains. The announcement follows a day after President William Ruto announced the reopening of schools on Monday May 15th.
Addressing the public on Thursday morning at Karen C Secondary School noted that the schools to be spared from President Ruto’s directive include those in the Tana River, Homa Bay and Kisumu counties.
He said students would keep learning even if schools stayed closed. The government promised to find other ways for them to learn. He added that 95% of schools in Kenya were ready for the second term.
The CS said the Ministry of Education would shorten the August break so students have more time to catch up on their studies after missing time in May. Schools have been postponed for a period of only one week, between May 6th and May 13th.

A report revealed that the number of flooded schools in the country are over 1900, with some having been completely submerged. Ndindi Nyoro, the Chair of the Budget Committe assured that the Parliament wouldn’t limit spending on flood recovery to prepare educational institutions.
“When issues of how much you have to spend come to Parliament, I want to assure all the government institutions that we are going to approve all expenditures,” he said.
