The Central Bank of Kenya has announced new changes to all Kenyan banknotes. The changes are aimed at enhancing the security of Kenyan banknotes, the CBK has stated.
According to the CBK, the new changes will affect the Sh. 50, Sh. 100, Sh. 200, Sh. 500 and the Sh. 1,000 currency banknotes.
The new banknotes will feature the signatures of CBK governor Dr. Kamau Thugge and Treasury Permanent Secretary Dr. Chris Kiptoo. They will also feature the year of print (for example 2024) and will have new security threads with colour-changing effects that will be unique to each denomination.
According to the CBK, all existing banknotes will remain legal tender and will circulate alongside the new releases.
“The rest of the features remain the same as those of the series issued in 2019. All banknotes currently in circulation remain legal tender and will circulate alongside the released banknotes,” the CBK stated.

The release of the currency notes will begin with Sh. 1,000 while other denominations will follow in the coming months.
The CBK says that the new version of the currency notes will have a distinct feel as you run fingers over them. In the Sh. 1,000 note for instance, the words Kenya, 1,000 value and the edge will be well defined so as to feel the texture.
