Gachora on banking with his father as NCBA opens Limuru, Githunguri branches

Gachora on banking with his father as NCBA opens Limuru, Githunguri branches

When was your first time ever to visit a bank? This is a question that will evoke fond memories, especially if you fall in the Generation X and the Millennials age categories. In the 80s and the 90s, there weren’t too many banks around.

In fact, only major towns where money moved around heavily had a banking presence. Going to the bank was no small fete. It was day set aside for that purpose alone. And if you happened to accompany your parent to the bank for your first experience, that memory will forever be etched in your mind.

This is the exact memory that NCBA Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer John Gachora reminisced on as the bank he leads opened new branches in Limuru and Githunguri towns in Kiambu County.

“Growing up, I often accompanied my late father to Barclays Bank in Githunguri. He would wait in line forever reading his favourite Taifa Leo. I would just take the page with Juha Kalulu,” said Gachora. “NCBA Bank Kenya has now opened its doors in Githunguri and I will have to visit with a copy of the Taifa Leo!”

Mr. Gachora recalled that when Barclays closed in Githunguri, they momentarily shifted to the National Bank of Kenya in Limuru.

“We are proud to now bring NCBA’s banking services to the tea town of Limuru. They say Ukitaka chai enda Limuru, nasi tupo Limuru,” he remarked.

His fond memories of accompanying his father for banking comes amidst a strategic growth by the NCBA Group under the Twende Mbele plan. Under the plan, NCBA has been growing its branch network across the country.

“We remain committed to be a distinguished brand known for customer experience. We have increased our footprint with 116 branches opened across the region,” says Gachora.

This aligns with the bank’s objective of being a catalyst for the growth of both local businesses and individual customers. “Banking requires the customer to be successful. The opening of the Limuru branch is a testament to our commitment made five years ago to bring services closer to the people, inspired by the thriving local businesses,” Trius Mwithiga, the NCBA Group Director of Retail Banking echoes Mr. Gachora’s sentiments.
