After four months of negotiations, the Kenyan government has completed the agreement with Adani Energy Solutions to upgrade and expand part of the country’s power transmission network over the next 30 years.

“This agreement marks the beginning of a transformative initiative to develop, finance construct, operate and maintain key transmission lines and substations across Kenya,” Wandayi remarked.

The Ministry of Energy stated that Adani Energy Solutions will secure the funding for the project through debt and equity. The repayment will take place over the 30-year project term as part of the infrastructure development plan.

The Kenyan government will not incur any financial expenditure over the term of the project.

The agreement indicates that Adani will handle both the development and management of the 400kV Gilgil-Thika-Malaa-Konza transmission line, which covers a distance of 208.73 km.

The project will include the construction of new substations at Gilgil, Thika, and Malaa, along with the extension at Konza. Additionally, Adani Energy Solutions will develop the 220kV Rongai-Keringet-Chemosit line, which covers 100 kilometres.

The Kenya Energy Transmission Company (KETRACO) will oversee the project. Over the past year, Kenya has been facing persistent power blackouts. The projects awarded to Gautam Adani’s conglomerate are to upgrade the country’s transmission to ensure reliable power.

“AESL will manage the transmission lines for 30 years, ensuring long-term sustainability and efficiency and thereafter transfer the project and all its assets to KETRACO,” Wandayi stated.
