List of universities licensed to offer law diplomas, degrees and Masters

The Council of Legal Education (CLE) has published the names of universities cleared to offer law degrees and diplomas in Kenya.

In a notice dated December 31, 2024, CLE Chief Executive Officer Jennifer Gitiri said only four institutions have been cleared to offer masters programmes, 18 approved to offer a Bachelor of Laws, and four approved to offer a Diploma of Law.

“Under the provisions of Sections 2, 8 (1) (b), 18, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23 and 48 of the Legal Education Act Chapter 168 Laws of Kenya, the following are the ONLY licensed Legal Education Providers and Legal Education Programmes in Kenya as indicated under each respective cluster,” the notice reads.

The approved universities are:

Master of Laws Programme

1.Strathmore Law School
2. Mount Kenya University School of Law
3. Catholic University of Eastern Africa Faculty of Law
4. Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology School of Law

NCBA

CLE noted that Strathmore Law School’s license expired on November 19, 2024, and the institution has a pending application for a new license.

On the other hand, Mount Kenya University School of Law has its accreditation running until March 23, 2026 while Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) Faculty of Law has been licensed until September 21, 2028.

Meanwhile, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology (JKUAT) School of Law holds a license valid until June 20, 2028.

For Bachelor of Laws program (LL.B.) the council listed 18 institutions whose licenses are valid. They include:

2. Africa Nazarene University School of Law
3. Chuka University Faculty of Law
4. Moi University School of Law
5. University of Nairobi Faculty of Law – Parklands Campus
6. Egerton University Faculty of Law
7. Kabarak University School of Law
8. Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA) Faculty of Law
9. Strathmore Law School
10. Maseno University School of Law
11. South Eastern University of Kenya School of Law
12. Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture & Technology School of Law
13. Riara Law School
14. Kenyatta University School of Law
15. Daystar University School of Law – Athi River Campus
16. University of Embu School of Law
17. Kisii University School of Law
18. Mount Kenya University School of Law – Parklands Campus

At the same time, CLE listed four institutions whose licenses for diploma in law are valid. They include:

  1. Catholic University of Eastern Africa (CUEA)
    2. Mount Kenya University
    3. Kisii University
    4. Kenya School of Law
