KRA goes after Morara Kebaso over Sh. 186 million tax evasion

The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has started investigations on politician Morara Kebaso over what it terms as tax evasion amounting to tens if millions.

The KRA has summoned Morara to appear at its offices on January 13, 2025.

“You are hereby requested to avail for examination copies of the entities’ records, books of accounts, and any other documents including copies of general ledger, asset register, invoices, purchases and sales ledger, payroll records, directors accounts, debtors and creditors ledger, bank statements for both companies and directors,” the KRA stated in the notice to Morara.

The KRA states that companies associated with Kebaso have been filing nil returns despite pocketing up to Sh. 186 million from his businesses over the last three years.

The five companies that have been placed under investigation include Igrow Digital Enterprise, Morara Home Furniture, Luku Fashion, Morara Properties Limited (Blacksmith Morara Limited) and Backtent Security Limited.

The KRA states that these companies “have been declaring nil income or not filing returns despite the fact of ownership of properties, business undertakings and other assets”.

The taxman has also listed three bank accounts that are operated by Morara. The accounts include a personal account owned by Morara, an account under Morara Properties Limited, and another account under Morara Home Furnitures.

The taxman says that the accounts owned by Morara received tax credits of Sh. 9.5 million in the year 2022. In the year 2023, they received Sh. 31.9 million. Last year, they received the biggest amount of Sh. 144.9 million.

The account under Morara Home Furnitures received the largest amount at Sh. 146.9 million.

Out of the Sh. 186 million earnings, the KRA states that Morara owes the State Sh. 27 million in taxes.

The KRA further states that records from the National Transport and Safety Authority show that Morara owns four cars, a TukTuk and a motorcycle. “These assets are owned despite the declaration of nil or non-filing of income,” says the KRA.
