Global shipping company Maersk warns of cargo delays at Mombasa port

By Brian Kipchumba

Leading Danish global shipping company, Maersk gave a customer advisory warning clients of anticipated cargo delays at the port of Mombasa. It linked the docking congestion to increased yard density and equipment problems.

This will likely affect various goods, including food and non-food items set for the Kenyan market and other regional markets like Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan that still depend on the port.

Maersk said in a statement that it has encountered higher-than-expected yard occupancy in recent weeks, leading to delays in ship docking and departures. The delay has disrupted operations prompting the company to adjust its timeline.

Aggravating the situation, vessels from East Asia are experiencing delays due to heavy traffic at major ports such as Singapore, Shanghai and Ningbo. Ships set to arrive on Thursday, on this route are now expected to dock on Friday.

The Kenya Port Authority (KPA) has announced a 12.1% increase in Cargo volume at the port of Mombasa, processing over 29.92 million metrics in the first 9 months of 2024 in contrast to 29.92 million metric tonnes in 2023.

The growth is due to congestion at Bordering ports, leading shipping lines and importers having to redirect cargo to Mombasa.

Maersk provided a specific timeline for its Mawingu and Mashariki services noting that due to current challenges sailing, docking and cut-off details are subject to adjustment.

Customers are thereby advised to adhere to cut-off timelines and formulate a strategy for timely stacking and gate-in of export containers to ensure streamlined loading.
