Tips for applying for government jobs

Before applying for jobs advertised by government, applicants need to check the requirements.

Apart from the usual CV, cover letter, and certificate requirements, most government jobs also require applicants to provide the following documents.

  1. Certificate of Good Conduct
  2. EACC clearance
  3. HELB clearance
  4. KRA compliance certificate
  5. Clearance from a reputable credit referencing bureau.
  6. Copy of your ID
  7. Other jobs could also require you to send two or more copies of your application to different addresses. For example, one copy to be addressed to the CEO, while the other one is to be addressed to the hiring team.

Tips for crafting a professional application email

In Kenya, many government agencies require applicants to send their applications via email. So, as a candidate, how do you stand out from other applicants?

According to best practices, always include a well-written email with your CV. A thoughtful email can create a favorable initial impression and set the appropriate tone for your application. Refrain from submitting your CV without context or introduction. Most people do this.

Precise and professional subject line

Craft a specific subject line that includes the job title and your name. For instance, “Application for [Job Title] – [Your Name].” Or as instructed on the job advert. This aids the hiring manager in quickly identifying your email’s purpose.

Personalized greeting

When possible, address the hiring manager by name. A personalized salutation, such as “Dear [Hiring Manager’s Name],” demonstrates your effort to research and customize your application. Only include name if you are sure.

Emphasize relevant skills

In the email body, briefly express your interest in the position and explain how your abilities and experience match the role.

For example, “My background in [relevant skills/experience] positions me well to contribute to your team.”

CV format

Send your CV as a PDF to preserve formatting and ensure a professional appearance. Avoid sending scanned documents or images, as they may appear unprofessional or be difficult to read. Scans are also not Application Tracking System (ATS) friendly.

Black tax: My mom says she’ll curse me if I don’t send her money yet I’m broke, what should I do?

Concise and error-free content

Ensure your email is clear, concise, and free of spelling or grammatical mistakes. Proofread carefully to maintain a professional image.

Express openness to further discussion

Conclude your email by showing your willingness to discuss your application further. For example, “I would appreciate the opportunity to discuss how my skills align with your team’s needs. Please let me know a convenient time to connect.”

Include contact details

Always provide your full name, phone number, and email address in your signature. This facilitates easy communication for the hiring manager.

By adhering to these guidelines, you can create a polished and professional application email that enhances your chances of making a positive impression on potential employers.
