USAID Kenya contracts, grants canceled by Trump cross Sh108 billion

The amount in value of USAID Kenya contracts and grants that have been canceled by US President Donald Trump’s government has now crossed the Sh108 billion mark. This is according to the latest disclosures which show that contracts and grants worth Sh108.34 billion have now been canceled in Kenya.

This is a significant escalation from the Sh35 billion worth of contracts and grants that were reported canceled two weeks ago. According to the disclosures, development firm DAI Global has lost Sh67.29 billion worth of USAID projects in Kenya.

At the same time, a contract between USAID and the International Development Group Advisory Services worth Sh8.4 billion has also been canceled. This contract was aimed at improving education in Africa through teacher training, curriculum development, access to quality learning materials and provision of solutions to poverty and gender disparity.

In addition, a contract in Kenya between USAID and Boston Consulting Group that was worth Sh167.19 million has also been canceled. A Sh11.49 billion contract between USAID Kenya and the Research Triangle Institute (RTI) that was scheduled to end in July 31, 2028 has also fallen apart.

These contracts are part of USAID funds that have been terminated by Trump’s government through the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) which is headed by the world’s richest man Elon Musk.

The USAID hit the dead end in the first week of February 2025 when the Trump administration sent all directly employed workers on leave.

According to the Congressional Research Service (CRS), the agency’s workforce totaled more than 10,000, with about two-thirds of all staff serving overseas. The agency had more than 60 country and regional missions.

African countries have been the hardest hit by the closure of USAID A majority of these countries failed to establish their own systems and programs and instead opted to rely on USAID programs for programs including HIV/Aids, provision of ARVS and contraceptives including basic condoms.
