Nancy Gathungu is the Auditor General of the Republic of Kenya. She was appointed to the position on July 17, 2020. She succeeded Edward Ouko to serve in the position for a non-renewable 8-year term.
Prior to her appointment as Auditor General, Ms Gathungu had served as the Director of Audit at the office of the Auditor General. She served in this role from February 2014 to July 2020.
From September 2010 to January 2014, Ms Gathungu had also served in the position of Deputy Director at the Kenya National Audit Office.
Previously, she had also served as SAI Kenya’s Director of Quality Assurance. She had also served as the Chief Internal Auditor at Kenyatta National Hospital, which is the biggest referral hospital in East and Central Africa. She served in this position at Kenyatta from the year 2000 to year 2006.
Auditor General Nancy Gathungu holds a Masters of Business Administration (Strategic Management) from the University of Nairobi. She also holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting) degree from the University of Nairobi.
Ms Gathungu is a Fellow of the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Kenya (FCPA-K) and a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA).
She is also a Member of Association of Women Accountants of Kenya (AWAK). She has vast experience in Public Sector auditing, Strategic Management and capacity building for Supreme Audit Institutions.

At the same time, Ms Gathungu has been a facilitator and resource person on such topics as audit process, communications, ethics, governance, integrity, and public finance and risk management and has handled various high-level assignments for the African Organization of English-speaking Supreme Audit Institutions (AFROSAI-E)as well as the International Organization of Supreme Audit Institutions Development Initiative (IDI).
Since becoming the Auditor General, Ms Gathungu has established herself as bold, transparent, and fearless in executing her duties and championing accountability in handling of public funds.
