Nairobi County forms private garbage collection company

The Nairobi County has established a private garbage collection company. The new company is known as Green Nairobi Limited. According to the Registrar of Companies, the Nairobi County government is the largest shareholder in the company with 4,850 shares.

The company then has a list of directors who hold 50 shares each. These directors are currently serving either as county ministers or chief officers.

The directors are Geoffrey Mosiria who is the Chief Officer for Environment, Charles Kerich who is the County Minister for Finance, Maureen Njeri who is the County Minister for Green Nairobi, Asha Abdi who is the Chief Officer for Finance, and Godfrey Akumali who is the County Secretary.

The new company is expected to start operations in April. It is expected to operate with a fleet of its own trucks and compactors. It is however not clear how these equipment will be sourced or funded.

Green Nairobi Limited is expected to coordinate garbage collection services across all boroughs in the capital city. This will also involve the introduction of new garbage collection and disposal charges. The new company will have a chief executive officer and a board of directors.

“It is a standard across top cities in the world to have a waste collection authority. We have been facing challenges with the exchequer and there are many vested interests in garbage collection. We have already invested in trucks and compactors for the company, which will coordinate efforts and ensure a clean city,” Nairobi County Governor Johnson Sakaja told a local media house.

“[The creation of the Nairobi Green Limited] is in with the County Governments Act, which allows counties to establish private entities. County officials are holding the shares in trust. It is just like the Nairobi water where the governor, county secretary, and county governments are the officials.”
