KNH to build 2,500 housing units for staff and caretakers

The Kenyatta National Hospital is set to build 2,500 housing units for its staff and caretakers in a housing project that is expected to be a new source of revenue for the referral hospital.

This has been revealed by the National Treasury. According to the National Treasury, the units shall comprise units ranging from studios to four-bedroom apartments. “The proposed project aims to develop 2,500 residential units at Kenyatta National Hospital to meet the housing needs of critical staff, with accommodations ranging from studio to four-bedroom apartments. It also provides housing for families and patient caregivers at a fee,” the National Treasury said in a statement.

According to the National Treasury, the housing project shall be in implemented as a public-private partnership. The contract shall be tendered out through a competitive bidding process. However, the National Treasury did not reveal the estimated cost of construction.

KNH is currently the largest referral hospital in the country. It employs over 6,000 workers. The hospital complex measures 45.7 acres (18.5 ha) within which it also hosts partner institutions such as the University of Nairobi (College of Health Sciences) and the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC).

The hospital has a bed capacity of 2,400 beds and attends an annual number of 949,000 inpatients and 800,000 outpatients annually. With 50 wards, 24 out-patient clinics, 26 theatres, 82 ICU beds and an Accident and Emergency department.
