Starting small and growing big; the rise of small-scale manufacturing among Kenyan youths

By Peninah Mwende

Small-scale manufacturing is quietly changing the lives of many young Kenyans. In today’s world, where finding jobs can be tough, small manufacturing businesses are giving youth a chance to build their own success from scratch.

Unlike large factories that need expensive machines and big warehouses, small manufacturing can start with simple tools and little space. It’s becoming a smart option for many young people who want to earn a living without depending on office jobs.

Examples of Small Manufacturing

Co-Op post

Some of the most popular small manufacturing businesses today include:

  • Making liquid soap, bar soap, and body lotion
  • Producing yoghurt and fresh juice for local shops
  • Creating handmade furniture like coffee tables and shoe racks
  • Baking cakes and biscuits in small bakeries
  • Producing handmade crafts and home decorations

Young people are learning to make quality products and sell them directly to customers in their neighborhoods or online.

Challenges

NCBA

Even though the sector is growing, small manufacturers still face many challenges. Some struggle to find good equipment and affordable raw materials. Others face competition from big companies that sell similar products at lower prices.

There are also difficulties with licensing and meeting the right health and safety standards, especially when making food or beauty products.

Opportunities

Despite these challenges, many young people are succeeding. County governments, NGOs, and youth groups are now offering training sessions, mentorship, and small loans to help them grow.

Many youths are using social media platforms like WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook to market their products. Others are taking part in local trade fairs to attract new customers.

“When I started making yoghurt from home, I was nervous. But now, I deliver to shops and schools around me.” says a young entrepreneur from Machakos.

Small manufacturers are also creating jobs for others. A simple soap-making business can grow and hire young people from the same community.

Conclusion

Small manufacturing is proving to be more than just a survival plan. It is becoming a real business path for young people who are creative, hardworking, and willing to start small. With the right support and skills, this sector has the power to reduce unemployment and change many lives.

It’s not about starting big. It’s about starting with what you have and learning as you grow.
