Kenya Airways is launching its direct flights to Gatwick, London. The JKIA-Gatwick direct flights will be operated by Kenya Airways’ Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner.
Gatwick will now be KQ’s second entry point to the UK market after its current slot at the London Heathrow International Airport. According to KQ General Sales Manager East Africa Rose Kisel, Heathrow Airport cannot accommodate more flights.
“We are excited about a second entry point in the UK. The slots in Heathrow do not accommodate more flights, and this is the reason we are starting flights to Gatwick in the UK,” she said.
The carrier’s chief executive officer had previously stated that the direct flights to Gatwick are part of the carrier’s route expansion strategy to opening up more opportunities in the United Kingdom market.
“The United Kingdom is essential and strategic for Kenya Airways and Kenya. It provides a gateway for trade, tourism, education, business, leisure travel, and diaspora connections. We are excited to add Gatwick Airport to our expansive network as it means that KQ guests now have more options in and out of the UK and a convenient schedule that suits their travel preferences,” Kilavuka had said.
A spot check on the national carrier’s flight booking website shows that the JKIA-Gatwick direct flights take about 9 hours and 10 minutes, departing from the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport’s Terminal 1A at around 23.40pm and arriving at London Gatwick International Airport’s Terminal S at around 06:50.
According to Kenya Airways Chief Commercial and Customer Officer Julius Thairu, the inaugural direct flight to Gatwick that was scheduled to depart from Nairobi on July 2, 2025, was fully booked.
