Teachers in Kenya are set for improved salaries following a new multi-billion deal. The deal on the new salaries teachers will earn has been agreed on and signed by the Teachers Service Commission, the Kenya National Union of Teachers (KNUT), Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet), and Kenya Union of Special Needs Education Teachers (Kusnet).
Under the new deal, teachers under Job Group B5 who are currently the lowest paid among all teaching groups will get a salary raise of Sh5,827. They will earn Sh28,620 up from Sh22,793. The job group B5 is the entry-level for primary school teachers.
In this Job Group, the highest paid teacher has been earning Sh28,491. This teacher will get a pay hike of Sh8,609 to earn Sh37,100.
Teachers under Job Group C1, which is the entry level Job Group for secondary school teachers will take home Sh35,336 up from the current Sh28,491, reflecting a pay increase of Sh6,845.
The highest paid teacher in this category has been taking home Sh35,614 and will now get a hike of Sh11,647 to earn Sh47,261.
Teachers who are classified as Senior Teacher II, Lecturer II, Special Needs Education Teacher II and Secondary Teacher II in Job Group C2 have received a salary hike of between Sh4,799 and Sh10,454. The lowest earning teacher in this category will now take home a salary of Sh41,420 from the current salary of Sh36,621.
In the same category, teachers who have been earning the highest amount of Sh46,776 will now take home Sh57,230.
In Job Group C3, teachers who have been earning between Sh44,412 to Sh56,514 will now pocket between Sh49,781 and Sh66,233. This category includes teachers who are classified as Senior Teachers in Special Needs Education and Secondary school teachers.
Under Job Group C4, teachers who are currently are paid between Sh52,308 and Sh67,220 will now earn between Sh58,585 and Sh77,120, reflecting an increase of between Sh6,277 and Sh9,900. This is the category that includes senior masters and lecturers in teacher colleges.
In the Group C5 which includes Deputy Principals and Senior Masters, the lowest paid teacher will get an increase of Sh4,975 to earn Sh69,745 up from the current Sh64,770. The highest paid teacher will get an additional Sh17,463 to pocket Sh96,130 up from the current Sh78,667.
Under the Group D1 which has Senior Master II and Principals III, the lowest paid teacher will take an additional Sh2,359 to increase his pay from the current Sh78,625 to Sh80,984. The highest paid teacher will get an additional Sh4,171 for a salary of Sh99,272 from the current Sh95,101.
Group D2 for Deputy Principals II and Senior Masters I will see the lowest paid pocket an additional Sh3,152 to increase their pay from Sh92,119 to Sh95,271. The highest paid in this group will get Sh5,461 to push their pay from the current Sh110,551 to Sh116,012.
Teachers in the Group D3 which has Principals and Deputy Principals I will now earn between Sh109,224 and Sh133,347. This follows and increase of between Sh4,042 and Sh6,278 from the Sh105,182 to Sh127,069 that they have been earning.
Senior Principals under Group D4 will have their salary increase from Sh118,242 to Sh121,789 for the lowest earners, reflecting an increase of Sh3,547.
The highest earners in this group will now take home Sh150,675 from the current Sh143,581, reflecting an increase of Sh7,094.
Chief Principals in Group D5 will get an increase of between Sh3,941 to Sh7,880. Their pay will increase from Sh131,380 to Sh135,321 for the lowest earners and Sh159,535 to Sh167,415 for the highest earners in this group.
