Cost of living hits 8-month high

Kenya’s inflation edged up to at 6.47 percent year-on-year in October, from 6.34 percent last month, driven mostly by food prices, the statistics office said on Monday.

The Kenya National Bureau of Statistics said in a statement that on a month-on-month basis, the inflation was at 0.62 percent, compared with September’s 0.34 percent.

Food and non-alcoholic drinks’ inflation was 0.96 percent month-on-month.

“This was attributed to a rise in prices of several food rices which outweighed the decreases,” said KNBS in a statement.

Consumers, though, got a relief in refiling of coking gas. The cost of a 13-kg cooking gas declined 1,989 in October from 2.029 in September and 2,401 in October last year.
