Quickmart suspends staff for beating customer over milk at Buruburu branch

Quickmart Supermarket has broken its silence over a viral video that has been circulating on social media. The video details how a customer was accused of stealing 57 litres of milk and beaten up by staff at the Quickmart Supermarket Buruburu branch.

“Our foremost priority is the well-being and dignity of every customer who walks through our doors. We deeply regret the distress this incident has caused, and we sincerely apologize to the affected customer and to everyone who feels let down by this experience,”  the retailer said in a statement.

In the viral video, the customer explains that they went to the milk depot inside the retailer to purchase milk. They paid for one litre of milk and were issued with a receipt. However, at the depot, they did not find any attendant to hand over the milk. After waiting for a while, they concluded that perhaps because they had already paid and had a receipt, it was up to them to collect the litre they had paid for.

As they were walking out though, they were approached by the staff at the retailer and asked to produce the receipt. They showed the receipt, but apparently, this wasn’t enough. The person who took the receipt canceled it and took them to another staff member who instructed them to leave the milk behind. The obliged.

However, as they left, they were once again stopped and taken to the receiving bay where they were beaten by employees at the supermarket. They were accused of stealing 57 litres of milk, which the staff claimed had gone missing.

One of the employees called the father to one of the assaulted customers. When the father arrived, the staff demanded payment for 57 litres of milk. However, the father refused to pay and instead reported the matter to the police.

Following the viral video, Quickmart says that it has suspended all staff who were involved in the incident pending investigations, and it has reached out to the victims to offer apologies.

“We have personally reached out to the affected customer to offer our heartfelt apologies, reassurance and support. We are committed to fostering a safe and respectful environment for all our customers and staff,” the retailer said in the statement.
