Saving is one of the most important financial habits for anyone looking to build a secure future.
Whether the goal is to pay school fees, buy a home, start a business, fund an investment or simply create a financial cushion for emergencies, putting money aside consistently can make big goals more achievable.
However, saving can be difficult when there are competing financial demands and no clear structure to keep individuals committed to their targets. This is where a dedicated savings account can make a difference by giving savers a simple and disciplined way to set money aside.
Equity Bank’s Jijenge Account is designed with this need in mind, providing individuals with an avenue to save towards specific financial goals while maintaining flexibility over the period of saving.
As its name suggests, Jijenge, which means “build yourself”, is aimed at helping customers gradually build towards their aspirations through regular savings. The account is available to individuals, either as single account holders or jointly.
One of its notable features is the low entry requirement. Customers can open a Jijenge Account with an initial deposit of just Sh300 and make minimum monthly contributions of Sh300.
This makes the product accessible to people who may want to start saving without having to commit a large amount of money upfront.
The account also introduces an element of financial discipline by requiring a minimum operating period of six months, during which partial withdrawals are not permitted.
Customers can, however, determine their preferred savings period from six months onwards, allowing them to align their savings with the timeframe of their financial goal.
Another feature that distinguishes the account is the absence of monthly or ledger charges. This means customers can continue building their savings without having a monthly maintenance fee eating into their balances.
For customers who want to automate their savings, the bank offers free internal standing orders to the account. This allows regular contributions to be scheduled, reducing the risk of forgetting to save or spending money that was intended for a particular goal.
Accessibility is also a key consideration. Jijenge customers can access their accounts through Equity Bank branches across the country, providing a nationwide network for customers who require assistance or wish to conduct transactions.
Beyond saving, the account also provides access to credit. Customers may qualify for instant loans of up to 90 per cent of their savings at discounted rates. This gives savers an additional financial option while retaining the underlying savings as a form of security.
The account is therefore positioned not just as a place to keep money, but as a financial tool that can support customers as they work towards their goals.
How to get started
Individuals opening a Jijenge account singly or jointly are required to visit the nearest Equity Bank branch with their original identification document and a KRA PIN.
The will then be required to complete an application form. Once the application is processed, customers can begin saving.

Security remains an important consideration when using any financial service. Customers are advised not to disclose their account details to anyone claiming to be an Equity Bank employee and requesting confidential information. Anyone who suspects that their account information may have been compromised should contact the bank immediately.
Transactions involving cash deposits to the account are processed on a real-time basis, providing customers with timely visibility of their savings.
