1). East African Portland Cement
In November 2016, Portland Cement announced that it would be sending home at least 1,000 employees. This came as the cement maker sought to cut on its payroll which it said was beyond the industry’s.
2). Family Bank
In October last year, Family Bank announced that it would lay off an unspecified number of employees with an aim of cutting high staff costs which had kept the bank’s operating expenses above Sh. 6 billion since 2015.
3). Airtel Kenya
In early January 2017, Airtel Kenya sent home 100 employees barely a year after sending another 60 employees packing. The telecommunications firm fired the employees in a bid to stay afloat amidst growing competition from Safaricom and Equitel.
4). Kenya Airways
National carrier Kenya Airways in January 2017 joined the list of companies firing employees. KQ announced that it would fire 38 employees barely a year after it announced that it would send home 600 workers. The national carrier has been returning billions of losses annually, and was hoping to recoup at least Sh. 2 billion from the sacking of the 600 employees.
5). Sameer Africa
In September last year, Sameer Africa announced that it would shut down its Nairobi factory and fire employees. Over 600 workers were expected to be affected.
6). Royal Media Services
The media house sent a number of its key employees home in 2016. This saw the departure of key among others Business anchor and reporter Terryanne Chebet.
7). Standard Group
The Standard Group also sent home employees as it sought to cut on its operational costs and retain a considerable workforce. At least 300 employees were affected by the move.
