The prices of cooking gas have risen sharply over the past one month. They have now crossed the Sh. 2,000 mark for the 13kg cylinder.
This is the first time that the prices have risen this much since July 2016 when the National Treasury scrapped levies on the commodity.
Currently, Total Kenya is charging Sh. 2,050 to refill a 13-kg cylinder in Nairobi while KenolKobil is selling its K-gas brand at Sh. 2,030.
Dealers have attributed the rebounding prices to higher global cost at a time when the price of crude oil, from which the gas is extracted, is rising.
Shell, dealer of Afrigas brand, for instance, is refilling the 13-kg cylinder at Sh. 1,980 in Nairobi while State-owned National Oil charges the lowest at Sh. 1,950 for its SupaGas brand.
Total charges Sh950 for a 6-kg cylinder, KenolKobil (Sh. 980), Shell (Sh. 970) and Sh. 900 for National Oil.
