The price of half a litre of milk has now crossed the Sh. 60 mark.
In many of Nairobi outlets, Brookside whole milk is selling at Sh. 63, while Ilara Fresh and KCC Fresh whole are retailing for Sh. 60.
500ml for sour milk has also risen, with KCC Mala and Brookside Lala retailing at Sh. 75 from Sh. 65 last month.
“Processors are currently operating below their installed capacity as the acute shortage of raw milk deepens and demand for the commodity rises, pushing up the price,” said Kenya Dairy Board (KDB) managing director Margaret Kibogy.
New Kenya Cooperative Creameries (New KCC) managing director Nixon Sigey said the company had increased retail price of the half litre packet by Sh. 3 in line with the Sh. 3 increase in producer price.
Currently, processors are currently reconstituting powder milk estimated to be worth Sh. 2 billion into fresh milk to maintain supply.
For instance, New KCC and Brookside are reportdely holding in excess of over 1.2 million kilogrammes of powdered milk.
